Rep Burchett introduces Legislative Line Item Veto Act of 2025

March 11, 2025

WASHINGTON, D.C., (March 11, 2025) – Yesterday, U.S. Congressman Tim Burchett (TN-02) introduced the Legislative Line Item Veto Act of 2025.

The Legislative Line Item Veto Act of 2025 amends the Congressional Budget and Impoundment Control Act of 1974 to grant the President the authority to propose cancellations of specific discretionary budget amounts, direct spending items, or targeted tax benefits within 30 days of a bill's enactment.

The legislation allows the President to temporarily withhold discretionary funds or suspend direct spending and tax benefits for up to 30 days, which can be extended by another 30 days with a supplemental message, while Congress reviews the proposals. It also includes safeguards to prevent duplicate cancellations and requires the Congressional Budget Office to estimate savings, while the Comptroller General monitors compliance.

"We're just in too deep right now," said Rep. Burchett. "President Trump needs every tool at his disposal so that we can begin to slowly dig ourselves out of this financial mess we're in."
