Burchett to Speaker Pelosi: Remove all House COVID-19 restrictions

May 13, 2021

WASHINGTON, D.C. (May 13, 2021) – Today, U.S. Representative Tim Burchett (TN-02) is calling on House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to remove all COVID-19 restrictions in the U.S. House of Representatives.

In a letter to Speaker Pelosi, Rep. Burchett says the Speaker's strict COVID-19 restrictions are no longer necessary given new U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidance on masks.

"In light of recent U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidance, I write to request you immediately remove all restrictions and provisions instituted in response to COVID-19 in the U.S. House of Representatives," Rep. Burchett wrote.

House COVID-19 protocols that Rep. Burchett calls for an end to include:

  • Proxy voting practices;
  • Virtual committee hearings;
  • The House's mask requirement;
  • Restricted access to the U.S. Capitol building and House Office Buildings for official business and;
  • Suspensions of U.S. Capitol tour operations.

Rep. Burchett also believes that the House of Representatives returning to normal operations sends an important message to the American public.

"It is important that we, as members of Congress, lead by example by returning to normal operations," Rep. Burchett wrote. "I look forward to getting back to work on behalf of the American people."
